Whatever season you find yourselves, God's plan for you and your spouse is to be prosperous in your marriage relationship.
As in nature and in life, your marriage follows a series of seasons. Beginning from the day you marry through your golden years, each season brings new joys and new challenges. As a couple, you must continually work to ensure that your relationship will endure each season of marriage.
Spring – Spring is the season in which we begin our marriage. We are madly in love and our partner becomes idealized as our solution to all the problems. This is the “dream of marriage stage,” where it seems like everything we’ve seen in the movies is true, we are content and completely in love. This is a wonderful and fresh stage in our first marital season.
Summer – The summer season is when we start a family and/or put our careers into high gear. Even though the birth of our children is a wonderful event, it can also be the beginning of immense change in our marital roles. Suddenly our days are filled with feedings, diapers, little league games, dance recitals and college funds. It can also be a time of career highs, lows, promotions, layoffs and 50-hour work weeks. Couples often find that they grow apart during this stage as their focus moves from their partner to their children and careers. However, with much intentionality, though this season is busy, it is exciting as we watch our family evolve and experience our career goals.
Fall –The Fall season is a time of tremendous change, and so it is, in our marriages. This is the proverbial “empty nest” stage. After the hustle and bustle of the Summer season, this is the time when things may slow down and the look of our families may transform. This is the season in which we watch our children become adults, marry and begin having families of their own. Fall is a time of readjusting our focus; it is also a time when couples have the opportunity to reconnect as the whirlwind of child rearing and demanding careers begins to calm.
Winter – This is the final season in a marriage, in many ways. This is the time when we get to enjoy retirement and grandchildren! However, health issues may become a concern and eventually we must face the loss of a partner. But it is also the time when couples can fully enjoy each other again. After reconnecting in the Fall, this season can be much like Spring, where the focus is once again on one another. While it can be a time of many adjustments, it is also a wonderful season to truly express our love to our spouse.
George and Janie Gardner have been married 40+ years. During this time they have pastored three churches and have served in many capacities of ministry. Primarily they have served in marriage ministry for nearly 30 years, hosting marriage conferences, working with couples in crisis and marriage preparation. Recently they have felt called to reach out to pastors, missionaries and other ministry leaders who are experiencing burnout or struggling in their marriage relationship.
To see pastors, missionaries and other ministry leaders and their spouses thriving in their marriage relationship while serving in ministry.
We open our two-bedroom guest house, specifically for pastors, missionaries and ministry leaders, located in Easley, SC, for a time of respite. This separate, quiet and comfortable home provides a private place for rest and renewal, reflection, planning, prayer, or simply solitude with the Lord.
George and Janie have hosted and spoken at Christian marriage retreats since 2005. Their passion is to offer tools to couples so that they can thrive in their marriage relationship.
In partnership with Shepherds Heart Ministry, we provide faith-based encouragement for pastors, missionaries and ministry leaders (and their spouses) who feel alone, burned out, and are struggling in their marriage relationship.
Partner with us by joining our Prayer Team. We are looking for people who are passionate about prayer and willing to pray for each couple who reaches out for encouragement and guidance. Praying for healing and restoration, and for wisdom and guidance from the Holy Spirit.
Your support and contributions will enable us to host ministry couples for 6-day intensives, by providing them with both accommodations and meals for the entire week.
